Happy New Year! Brett, Elizabeth, Ari and I wish you all the best as 2023 begins. And what a way to begin, after the stunning midterm elections result! I would like to thank each and every DAUK volunteer who called, wrote and registered voters to achieve this result. The unity and resoluteness of Democrats is something to behold. There is so much good we can, and will, accomplish together.
Last week, our House leader Hakeem Jeffries, gave a rousing speech for the 118th Congress. There were a lot of great moments and here is my favorite:
“We believe that in America, our diversity is a strength, it is not a weakness — an economic strength, a competitive strength, a cultural strength, our diversity is a strength. It is not a weakness. We are a gorgeous mosaic of people from throughout the world. As John Lewis would sometimes remind us on this Floor, ‘we may have come over on different ships, but we’re all in the same boat now.’ We are white, we are Black, we are Latino, we are Asian, we are Native American, we are Christian, we are Jewish, we are Muslim, we are Hindu, we are religious, we are secular, we are gay, we are straight, we are young, we are older, we are women, we are men, we are citizens, we are Dreamers, out of many, we are one. That’s what makes America a great country. And no matter what kind of haters are trying to divide us, we’re not going to let anyone take that away from us – not now, not ever.” – Leader Jeffries, January 7, 2023
America is truly unique in these positive ideals, to this day not matched anywhere else in the world. Thank you for your wise words, Leader Jeffries.

Looking out over 2023, Democrats Abroad UK is planning an exciting year of events, where you can meet fellow Democrats, support get-out-the-vote efforts, and have fun! DAUK hosts the largest community of Democratic Americans outside the US, yet we have considerable room for growth. With your help, we can continue to build community, promote US voter participation from abroad and make our shared values come to life. If you wish to become a sustaining donor to help in these efforts, please sign up here! Any amount, even $5 a month, will matter.
Please stay tuned for announcements of upcoming events with Democratic leaders, thinkers and artists. On January 17, the DAUK Book Club will discuss Edible Economics, about the intersection of food and global (political) capital. On January 20, the Global Women’s Caucus will host reproductive rights expert Carrie Baker on “Women Win the Midterms: Now What?” Please see below for more detail.
Most importantly, please send in your ballot request form for 2023 (this must be done in most states annually). Go to www.votefromabroad.org and submit your registration and ballot request form (FPCA), then confirm receipt with your local election official. You will automatically receive all ballots for all races you are eligible to vote in for the entire calendar year!
Once again, warmest wishes for 2023.
Democratically yours,
Wen-Wen, Brett, Ari and Elizabeth – the DAUK officers
